Gong Li is a Singaporean

Chinese actress Gong Li is formally a Singaporean after acquiring an oath and collected her Singapore identity card on Saturday (Nov 8, 2008).

The 43-year-old actress was said to pick up her identity card on August 23, but failed to come out since she was taking a film abroad. Her nonattender galled some Singaporeans who sensed that she was disesteeming her new country. But it’s totally history at present.

Gong Li is married to a Singaporean businessman since 1996, so the change of citizenship isn't wholly surprising. Both China and Singapore don't acknowledge dual nationality, which virtually means that she would have to abdicate her Chinese citizenship.

Chinese netizens are generally unpleasant about the news. Lots of them are criticizing Gong Li’s decision, although some are sharing cares that this would turn a trend among popular artists and younger generations.

Some netizens are showing support Gong Li though, expressing that it’s her freedom to decide her own way. A few also expressed that they'd also like to migrate out of China if given the opportunities.
